I Won A Galileoscope!!! Thank You Bob!!!

Oh Wow! I'm so excited that I won an awesome Galileoscope from Bob over at Black Holes and Astrostuff. Last month his daughter got married and he decided to celebrate the occasion by giving away 3 of these wonderful scopes. This was not a sponsored giveway... this was a very sweet, unique and generous way of celebrating a beautiful family event. I am so honored to be one of the recipients of this wonderful gift.

Our family will put this to great use for years to come. My son Jordan will be excited about this.... he used to love to go outside with his telescope and gaze into the night sky... and take photos of the moon. He used his Christmas money one year to buy a huge telescope that he used for this. I'm remembering the freezing cold winter nights when he dragged me outside with him to stand out there and freeze my fingers and toes off to look at stars and planets. And even though I about froze to death we had a great time... it was wonderful quality time and great memories for us to share. His telescope is broken now so he will be excited to have a scope again. He took some great pics through his old one so I'm sure he'll do the same with this one as well. Here are two of his pics... he took them by holding the camera up to the eye piece of the telescope... isn't that amazing that a kid did this??!! He was about 14 or 15 at the time.

It will also be put to great use as lil Steffie gets older... since we'll be homeschooling her I'm sure we'll spend many hours exploring the night sky as she begins her Astronomy and Astrology lessons... of course that's years down the road... in the mean time she can enjoy just looking for fun :)

Thank you so much Bob... for this wonderful gift! My family will put it to great use... your generosity is very much appreciated!!!

Toys R Us puked on my house!!! At least that's what it looked like by the time Austin went home this evening.... lol. There were toys and books scattered from one end of the house to the other.... what a mess to pick up!

Today actually went better than expected. Austie got here around 8:30 and the kids played really well together today. No furniture got turned over trapping anyone this time... no toys got put into the air vents... no one got naked and peed in the floor. They shared well for 2 and 3 year olds... and I still have hair left!

You just never know about these two... sometimes they play well together and sometimes it's one disaster after another. I'm sooo glad that today was one of the times that everything went well. The week is half over and so far so good...

Random Tuesday Thoughts

randomtuesday

This seemed to fit because today's thoughts have been pretty random...

I woke up this morning and went to brush my teeth and it hurt... I have a couple of teeth that are sensitive sometimes... today they are in overdrive... they hurt all day... until I finally put a clove on the most painful one... now it feels better. I just hope this isn't the beginning of some dental issues... I have no insurance and going to the dentist is a luxury.

I would love to have a pedicure... my feet look awful and with my excess weight it's hard to comfortably reach my toes to make them pretty. Can you believe at my age I've never had a pedicure??? My fingernails could use some work too... I used to do my own nails all the time... but for some reason I quit and haven't done them in years. In short my body is falling apart. We won't even go into my hair... it has major issues.

Steffie is in bed and the house is quiet. Adrian is still at work. This is what I consider "my time" of the day.... I don't have to worry about doing anything for anybody... well unless Steffie happens to wake up.

Lil Austie will be here bright and early in the morning to spend the day. I'm not a morning person... so I hope I'm not grumpy. I also hope he doesn't put toys in the air vent this time. He's so darned cute! And it's a good thing too... I can't get too upset with his cute lil self.

Adrian is off work on Saturday... I really don't want to sit home all day again and do nothing. He's had several weekends off while he's been in management training but that will be ending... this may be his last Saturday off for awhile... and it seems like most those weekends off we've just sat home and done pretty much nothing.

Earlier I was thinking about my Grandpa and the playhouse he built me when I was about 5... when Granny sold that house I sooo wanted to get my playhouse but I couldn't afford to have someone move it for me... so now it's gone. She sold the house about 15 years ago... and my playhouse in the back yard with it. We drove by there a few years ago and my playhouse was gone.... if they only knew the memories of that lil house with the strawberry patch beside it... maybe they would have had second thoughts about tearing it down... or whatever they did with it. He worked so hard to build it for me because I was his baby girl... I remember dancing on the floor of it before he even built the walls... and I remember planting the strawberries... and picking them every summer after. Oh well... my Grandpa and my playhouse and my strawberry patch may be gone.... but I'll always have the memories.

Maybe someday Steffie can have a playhouse and a strawberry patch... or maybe that's just another random wish that will fade with time...

I really need to get all of my shows recorded off my DVR and put onto DVD... I'm running out of recording room and I have another big batch of Friday the 13th the tv series scheduled to record next week. I love that show... and SciFi shows episodes of it in big blocks just randomly so I've been recording them and then putting them on DVD... it's pretty rare to find reruns of it airing.

So that's enough randomness for one day... I'm sure tomorrow will be insane with the two kids running around getting into everything they can find... maybe they'll find some of the things that have turned up missing lately!

Music Monday - Storms - Fleetwood Mac

Storms has always been one of my favorites from Fleetwood Mac. On the current tour Unleashed they are performing this song live for the very first time. I had the wonderful privilege of standing at the front of the stage in Nashville last month... at the feet of a Goddess.... as she sang... and cried... and danced.... and poured her heart out...

So here it is Storms... by Fleetwood Mac in Nashville 6-19-09

And I want to dedicate this one to my friend Storm at Confessions of a Psychotic Housewife...

Save Energy and Money!

About a year ago I was watching Oprah and they were talking about ways to live greener. We had already switched out most our light bulbs to the flourescent ones... at least in the lights we use the most.... which was one of the suggestions. They really do save money on your electric bill and fortunately the cost of them continues to go down.

Another suggestion she had was to unplug anything electrical that you are not using.... these items still use about 40% of their energy usage even when they are not turned on. So I started unplugging and our electric bill started dropping. We're on the levelized billing plan that averages your payments so the drop was not huge at first... but month by month I watched the usage go down and our average bill go down. This got me to thinking... every time I was in my kitchen I thought about how much my stove and other large appliances were using up just by sitting there.... it would be such a pain to pull them out and unplug them and then replug them when I need them... but it was eating me up...lol. So one day it occurred to me... my breaker box is in my laundry room which is just beside my kitchen... it's just a few steps to walk in there and turn these breakers off and on. So now that is what I do... when I'm not using my stove... my washing machine and dryer... my dishwasher.... and even on those wonderful days when we can open the windows and not use any air or heat.... I flip those breakers completely off!

Now I know everyone's breaker box is not that conveniently located... I certainly wouldn't want to go down to a basement... or out to a garage to do this... but fortunately mine is close to the kitchen. So if yours is convenient and you want to lower your electric bill you might want to consider doing this as well.

Of course now I go behind everyone else in the house unplugging things they left plugged in. When I was a lil girl I lived with my great-grandparents... and my Granny used to always unplug stuff.... even the tv at night before we went to bed... and I would think how nuts it was that she did this... But now I'm thinking that Granny... in her old fashioned ways was onto something... and I'm behaving more like my Granny in so many ways... she always went behind me turning off lights... and now here I go turning off lights and unplugging behind my kids. I have to say that my old fashioned Granny was smarter than I thought she was at the time... and I appreciate all that I learned from her. There are a lot of old ways that I wouldn't know or understand if I hadn't grown up living with her. So thank you Granny... for being my Mom!.... for teaching me the old fashioned ways..... I love you.... and I miss you.

Wanna See What $2 Can Buy??

Steffie and I had a lil adventure today. We were heading out for our weekly trip to the library... and to go to Buddy Bear's Playhouse.... but when we got down to the corner I saw the sign! ... at our favorite thrift store that is ..... "BOX SALE". So we had to make a lil detour. The box sales usually consist of boxes set out in the yard that you sort through and you can fill up plastic grocery bags for $1.... lucky us!.... today it was .50 cents per bag! So here is what we got filling 4 bags....

Steffie's toy bag... she got 4 dolls (one sings Twinkle Twinkle Little Star)... a battery operated tricycle for her dolls... a stuffed My Little Pony... and a calculator.

And also for Steffie... a coat for this winter.... and another to grow into.... two pairs of jeans (one is LEI)... and outfit for her dolls... and some nice holiday fabric that I can use make her a dress or outfit.

For me.... a leather jacket... 2 sweaters... and a velvet blazer

And for the heck of it.... a game

We probably could have found more but it was in the 90's and just too hot to be out there any longer sorting through the 50+ boxes in the hot sun... but I think we did pretty good for $2!

We made our trip to the library and then she got to play at Buddy Bear's for $2... then we visited Daddy at work and I got her a Krystal Kid's Meal for $1... so we had a nice lil outting for $5

Do You Want A FREE Wii ???

I know I sure do! And I found a way to get one! Just a few weeks ago I read the story of how Julie over at Momspective and Wii Mommies lost 60 lbs by using her Wii Fit and I determined that I really need one of these. I need to lose weight... I hate to exercise... but I love to play games so Julie inspired me to get one of these and get off my backside and lose the weight I need to lose for my health and so that I can feel better and have more energy for Steffie... lets face it... she's turning 4 and I'm turning 45.... so I really need to get into shape! Trouble is this thing is *expensive*! I know I can't fit this into my budget any time soon.... I would have to save for a few years to buy one. But I found this website that will let me earn a Free Wii.... and you can earn one as well. All I have to do is refer 7 people and complete a couple of offers to get my Free Wii with controllers and 2 free games.... and you can help me out by doing the same! So please... if this is something you want for yourself (and/or your kids) and can't afford it either click on the link and sign up under me... then you can be on your way to earning your Free Wii as well!

I've even joined the Wii Mommies already because really want to do this... I'm tired of being fat and tired of being tired!

A Big Spending Day

Well I got the rear window on my van replaced for $200.... that was definitely $200 we could have really used for something else. Things seem to be breaking and going missing around here faster than we can afford to repair or replace them. But it had to be done... you can't drive around with tiny pieces of glass falling off your window.... and I sure didn't want to drive around with plastic trash bags taped to my van either.

After we got the window repaired we stopped into one of our favorite used book stores McKay's... they actually carry way more than just books... they have CD's, DVD's, Video Tapes, Computer Games, Video Games and even the systems to play them on. Some of their stuff can be a lil pricey for used... but we can always find some good bargains there too. Today Steffie got 7 paperback Disney books (Winnie the Pooh and the Honey Tree, Lady and the Tramp, Beauty and the Beast, Peter Pan, Snaow White, Aladdin and Ariel and the Secret Grotto - .10 cents each!).... a Sesame Street book (Sesame Street Library from the Elmo's Neighborhood collection... she loves this set! - .60 cents).... Zinnia's Flower Garden and Big Sister Little Sister for .50 cents each.... and 5 Strawberry Shortcake books for .50 cents each ( Strawberry Shortcake is one of her favorites right now). Oh and a Fisher Price Little People video tape for .25 cents. Adrian got 6 cd's for $1 each... and I got a Loreena McKinnett cd for $1. Not a bad haul for $12!

Steffie loves books and has quite lil library of her own going. I've read to her since she was just a few months old so she has developed a great desire for books. I plan to teach her how to read this fall. She learned her alphabet when she was barely 2 and she already knows her phonics as well so learning to read should be a snap for her.

After all of this we did our grocery shopping for the next two weeks. In the middle of it all we had lunch.... a $1 Krystal Kids Meal for Steffie.... and a $5 Little Cesaer's pizza for us with canned drinks from the soda machine.... for a total of less then $8 for the 3 of us!

One Insanely Weird Weekend...

This past weekend was just weird... flatout weird. I just had to take a blogging break and so many lil weird things happened now I just gotta tell...

My Friday started bright and early with babysitting my 2 year old grandson Austin... he's a lil cutie... but he's constantly into things he shouldn't be... so between him and Steffie I was running around like crazy trying to keep with the mischief the 2 were making. I was supposed to do this for 8+ hours... so I was suprised when Hannah called to say her Dad would be here in 5 minutes to pick up Austin... this was around 2:00.

I was able to pick up the toys they had scattered from one end of the house to the other before Adrian was due home... and get a good amount of my blogging and dropping done. He got home around 6:00 and brought a box of 30 White Castle burgers and Steffies goodies. So we ate and she got her loot. Adrian has 4 days off work so I'm thinking we're having a good weekend... now mind you I've been feeling pretty crappy lately... thinking about how my family could care less whether they see me more than a time or two a year... about how I have no friends close by to hang with... and most of our weekends have been spent at home doing nothing... so I'm hoping for some fun and some adult company.

Well Adrian decides to take Steffie down the road to the lil playground for a lil bit to spend some Daddy time with her and to give me a break because at this point I just really need some time without kids ( I love the kids but sometimes a person just needs a break from them).... but before they get there my sister calls him to say she is stopping by... she had tried to call my cell which I didn't hear and our stupid Magic Jack # which I hate and don't even activate anymore and so she called him... he turns around and comes back home. Now this is strange occurance #1 because we have lived here for 9 years and in those 9 years my sister has been to my house 2 times... we go see her a couple of times a year when we're invited to family events at her house but she just doen't come to our house... I don't know why... she just doesn't. So we were a bit weirded out by her sudden visit.

She visits awhile and then we all walk outside to say our goodbyes and chat a few more minutes when all of a sudden wierd event #2 happens... I hear a huge BANG like a gunshot... so I'm like WTF?.... Steffie was in the driveway playing just a couple of feet from us... between Adrian's car and my van (which he backed up the driveway so the two rear ends were facing).... I walk over there and there is a HUGE hole in my back window. It just exploded and started crumbling all to pieces. I was really freaked out by it... we watched it continue to crumble for about 30 minutes.... had we not been standing right there when it happened I would have sworn some vandal had broken or shot out my window. But after some online research I have found that it happens... car windows... especially the back windows in vans... especially Dodge Caravans can just explode for no apparent reason... who knew??!... I didn't... never heard of it before...

After we all calm down and get settled for bed... we're laying there watching tv... and weird event #3..... my very good friend Cyn calls... she's coming to town tomorrow and wants to hang out... totally great unexpected news. I love Cyn... wish she lived closer than 2 hours away... but at least now she does live that close... when we first met she lived about 8 hours away near DC.

So while we are sleeping all of those White Castle burgers disappear... Sarah has been gone for 3 weeks staying with friends but she came home on Thursday and since she's been home she hasn't been here for 1 minute alone... she's had 5-10 other people with her. This is how Sarah is... she has a huge amount of friends with her almost constantly... fortunately the bunch spent most of the time over at her Dad's house in his pool. But they did come here that night long enough to devour our burgers.... and anything else they could find.

So Saturday we had a great visit with Cyn... we all loaded up and went to the local Chinese Buffet to eat... I love it... the food is good... it's close... and it's cheap! So we all stuffed ourselves miserably. Cyn had to leave right after we ate so Steffie decided to call her Nana ( my Mom) and ask if she could come see her... she loves her Nana but doesn't get to see her very much and is always wanting to go visit her. She said they were about to go eat but they would call as soon as they got back home and we could come over. Mom calls back a couple of minutes later... this is strange event #4... they are going to the Chinese Buffet to eat... she has never been there before... it is 5 minutes from my house.....she wants to know if we want to meet them there... we decline since we just stuffed ourselves at the very same buffet. So after they eat.. they drop by to visit.... my Mom just doesn't drop by either... she comes to my house maybe twice a year if we invite her over for dinner or some special event. So to have 3 people just come over like that within 2 days was just odd.... very nice... but not normal. I really wish I had family and friends who just dropped by to hang out... or called me up to say 'let's hang out' .... I've just never had that kind of special best friend.... except for the few years when my other sister and I were close like that... I miss that time... a close best friend is something that I always wanted.

So anyway.. on Sunday we decided to take Steffie to have a picnic at Coolidge Park in Chattanooga.... they have a really awesome water fountian that the kids can play in and it's FREE! And since we're broke until payday.... and then we still have to fix my van window.... it fit the bill perfectly. She had a great time! Here are some pics...

Everything went great we had a fun time.. Steffie loved the fountain... she giggled and splashed and ran around... it was so much fun to watch her laughing and playing. Afterwards we went for a walk across the Walnut Street Bridge.... and old wooden and steel bridge which has been converted to a walking bridge. The Delta Queen Riverboat is now parked in this area.... we watched her come in a few months ago.... and she is now a floating hotel on the Tennessee River.... as we walked across the bridge someone on the boat started playing the calliope so here are a few pics of the boat with steam coming from the calliope pipes....

On the way home Adrian decided to go the backway and take the "scenic route"... this was the first time that Steffie and I have ridden in his car since he bought it a few weeks ago because it needs some front end work to really make it as safe as we would like it to be... but since my van still has glass still crumbling on the back window we decided to take his car. On the way home... we're driving through 'da hood'.... I kid you not!... and a car backs out of a parking lot right in front of us... we had time to slow down quite a bit but we T-boned that car! We're all fine.... and the car still runs... who could tell it has a few more bangs.... and the guys in the other car were fine as well and were very much against calling police or insurance... we were fine with it as well since no one was hurt and his car only has liability insurance anyways because it a POS. I highly suspect the guys in the other car were doing something illegal... but I really wanted to get outta there.... so this was weird occurance #5... getting into an accident the first time we rode in his car.

So now it's Monday... hopefully the weirdness is over, we'll get more visitors, and maybe I'll find that BFF I would love to have. But tomorrow my van goes into the shop at a whopping $200 to fix the rear window. This is not petty cash for us. This means that this is the 3rd paycheck from his new job and we will still not be able to enjoy having the increase in salary because yet again something unexpected took away all the extra money. Oh well... at least I'll have the money to get it fixed... if he hadn't got the raise I wouldn't have that.

So I hope everyone has a great week.... and somebody for God's Sakes please turn off that damned weirdo magnet that is causing all of these weird things to happen... at least the bad weird things!
